If you know of a simpler way, let me know. Just hit the Windows key (or Start Menu) and type "Add VPN." When you get to the VPN management screen, you'll see this and can fill it out.īut L2TP VPN setup with a pre-shared key requires some more work. You can add other simpler (or Vendor) VPNs in a straightforward manner, but not L2TP. For some reason this was super easy in Windows 7, but in Windows 8.1 there isn't a clear way to just add a L2TP VPN. Now I'll setup VPN back to home on my Windows 8.1 machine. It looks small, but in reality it's very usable, especially from an iPad with a Bluetooth Keyboard. This of course, can be done on Android and Windows Phone as well. I've installed the FREE Microsoft Remote Desktop Client for iOS.Īnd here's me VPN'ed into my home PC from my iPhone. Once I'm VPN'ed in I can see a indicator in the top status bar. Specifically the Secret text box in iOS is the "pre-shared key" from your Synology L2TP VPN setup.Īt this point you'll get a nice VPN option on your Settings app under Personal Hotspot that wasn't there before. With L2TP you'll need your username and password, as well as a Shared Secret. You can also, if you like, setup a CNAME with your own domain and point it to that dynamic domain. NOTE: If you don't want to use your IP address, you can use the dynamic DNS feature built into your Synology, or any one of many dynamic DNS systems that will give you a nice domain like "" or whatever. I selected L2TP and put in my Server name or IP and named the account "home." Setting up iOS/iPhone/IPad for VPNįrom the iOS Settings app, go General | VPN. Here's what I did on my iDevice to setup VPN. If you succeed, you should be able to see yourself in the VPN Server | Connection List area on our Synology. I did this as a quick test by taking my iPhone off the wireless networking (thereby being on the open internet) and VPN'ing back in. I changed this under Security.Īt this point, you should be able to at least try to connect to your house via VPN. It's best to have your Synology use a Static IP address, or at least have a DHCP reservation so this IP doesn't change and things stop lining up.Īlso, ensure that your Router is passing L2TP traffic as well. The Device IP is the internal IP address of your Synology. ![]() On my Linksys, it's under Security, Apps and Gaming. Login to your router and in this case of L2TP, forward UDP ports 1701, 500, and 4500. It lets you know exactly what's going on, and it can be less of a "black box." However, there's something to be said for handling things yourself. It supports port forwarding, and the Synology can often talk directly to a router and request open ports. My router is a Linksys WRT1900ac that I like very much. NO need to give VPN access to users who won't use it. Just give the minimum privileges to the user that needs them. You can also setup a hosts file if you want to just hit a few things inside your house. I found this worked best for me when trying to access internal resources. Notice also that I selected my INTERNAL DNS server. Select L2TP (or whatever you want), and Enable it. Benefits are that it's on all major platform, it's generally considered secure, and it's easy to setup. I decided on L2TP, although there is some concern the NSA has weakened it. You should give some though as to which VPN technique you want to use. Setting up a Synology for L2TP VPNįirst, in the Synology Package Manager, ensure that you've got the Synology VPN Server package installed and running. The result is I can now remote into my home and manage things from any device I own. The Synology, my Router, my iOS device, and my Windows PC/Surface. The Synology will act as my VPN server as well. I use it for Plex, it hosts my files and photos, it manages my surveillance cameras and acts as a camera DVR, it runs a Minecraft Server, it's a Git server, it even runs Docker. It's not just a file server, it's an everything server, in my house. I have a a Synology 1511+ NAS appliance and I love it. I wanted it to be standards-based and not require any additional software installations. I wanted a VPN solution I could use on my iPhone/iPad and Surface. From GoToMyPc to Hamachi, again, there's dozens of ways. I do very much realize there are a lot of different options to do this, and have been for years. I wanted to be able to VPN into my home and remotely access my machines and files. The kinds of things we can do in our homes as individuals with off-the-shelf hardware would have needed an IT Dept of a dozen just 10 years ago, ya know? Amazing. It's amazing that I can basically be my own IT Department. ![]() ![]() ![]() Firearms are present, but are somewhat uncommon. To hear that in the middle of all this he had written a bunch of E Street songs was terribly exciting. "He said, 'Yeah, I did it in about two weeks.' That wasn't the first time he had done something in a quick burst, but I was taken aback as he had been so involved with the Broadway show, the book, and this Western Stars project had been on and off for years. By the 1870’s, Las Vegas was a major trade hub, with waves of people from the east arriving daily. Five mills were built in the Mora valley to provide flour. Las Vegas, San Miguel, Mora, and La Junta (now Watrous) supplied beef. With local farmers and merchants providing supplies for the troops, Fort Union infused a lot of cash into the local economy. Army built Fort Union 18 miles north of Las Vegas in 1851 to provide military protection for the wagon trains traveling the Santa Fe Trail. A windmill was erected in the Plaza and briefly used as a gallows in 1876. Though New Mexicans pressed for the restoration of autonomous governance and admission to the American Union from 1847 onward, New Mexico remained in territorial limbo for over 60 years, eventually becoming the 47 th state January 6, 1912. At the time, New Mexico had a democratically constituted government, but Kearny disbanded that and installed a military dictatorship based on the Kearny Code. With that loss, Las Vegas officially became an American frontier town at the beginning of what would be a turbulent territorial era.Īfter his speech on the Las Vegas plaza, Kearny and his army continued to Santa Fe, routing the New Mexico militia, and hoisting the Stars & Stripes over the plaza of the capital on August 18, 1846. As a result, traffic began to steadily increase on the Santa Fe Trail, which was the primary trade route linking Independence, Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico. A change in perspective accompanied the change in leadership, with Mexico embracing trade opportunities with the United States. Skull and Bones "taps" those that it views as campus leaders and other notable figures for its membership. Since the society's inclusion of women in the early 1990s, Skull and Bones selects fifteen men and women of the junior class to join the society. Skull and Bones selects new members among students every spring as part of Yale University's "Tap Day", and has done so since 1879. The first extended description of Skull and Bones, published in 1871 by Lyman Bagg in his book Four Years at Yale, noted that "the mystery now attending its existence forms the one great enigma which college gossip never tires of discussing." Brooks Mather Kelley attributed the interest in Yale senior societies to the fact that underclassmen members of then freshman, sophomore, and junior class societies returned to campus the following years and could share information about society rituals, while graduating seniors were, with their knowledge of such, at least a step removed from campus life. The association was founded by Russell and Daniel Coit Gilman, a Skull and Bones member. The society's assets are managed by its alumni organization, the Russell Trust Association, incorporated in 1856 and named after the Bones' co-founder. Alternative names for Skull and Bones are The Order, Order 322 and The Brotherhood of Death. The first senior members included Russell, Taft, and 12 other members. William Huntington Russell and Alphonso Taft co-founded "the Order of the Skull and Bones". Skull and Bones was founded in 1832 after a dispute among Yale debating societies Linonia, Brothers in Unity, and the Calliopean Society over that season's Phi Beta Kappa awards. The society is known informally as "Bones," and members are known as "Bonesmen," "Members of The Order" or "Initiated to The Order." It is one of the "Big Three" societies at Yale, the other two being Scroll and Key and Wolf's Head.
